How to make your own icing

2 August 2023

Icing is a delicious and easy way to decorate your cakes and cookies. Most people often have the basic ingredients at home to make their own. In this blog we will tell you how to make icing in a simple way. We also have tips for you on how to adapt it for different types of baked goods. Curious about this? Then read on quickly!

What ingredients do you need?

To make the icing, you need some basic ingredients, most of which you often already have at home. So you don't need to get difficult or expensive ingredients at home to make a tasty icing. You need the following:

How to make frosting

    1. Mix 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons butter or margarine in a bowl
    2. Mix this with a mixer on low speed until well blended
    3. Then add 2 tablespoons of milk and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and mix everything together well

It is desired that the icing is smooth and thick, but still easy to spread. If the icing is too thick, you can always add some extra milk and if it is too thin, add some more powdered sugar.

Icing for different baked goods

Now that you have made the basic glaze, you can adapt it to all kinds of different baked goods. A few examples are given below.

    • Cake, if you are going to bake a cake you can add a little more vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of the icing, this will match the cake better.
    • Cookies, to prevent the icing from dripping off the cookies you can thicken the icing by adding more powdered sugar.
    • Airy cake, to prevent the frosting for the airy cake from becoming too overpowering you can add less milk.
    • Rainbow cake, make different colors of frosting for this cake. You can do this by adding edible food coloring gels to the basic frosting recipe.
    • Marble cake, for a marble cake you can easily add chocolate to the base recipe.

Cooling

When you are going to decorate your cookies or cake with icing, it is important to make sure it has cooled completely. This will prevent the icing from melting and spilling out. You can also use a piping bag and make decorations on your cake or cookies for a professional look.

This way you can make easy and versatile icing! Customize the recipe for different types of baked goods. Icing is very easy to make and the best part is that you don't need a recipe. You can customize it to your own taste!
