How do you store buttercream during the summer months?
Buttercream is delicious as a filling and decoration on your baked goods, the only downside is that it is very temperature sensitive. This is because, as the name says, butter is a key ingredient and at high temperatures it heats up and starts to melt. This causes the buttercream to slide off your baking quickly. A tip to avoid this is to keep the buttercream refrigerated before using it. This keeps it firmer and less likely to melt while decorating your baked goods during high temperatures.
Another tip is not to use buttercream during the summer. There are plenty of alternatives you can use to fill and decorate your baking creation. Consider whipped cream, cream cheese or powdered sugar-based icing. These alternatives are often lighter in texture and can withstand hot temperatures better than buttercream. Always store buttercream in the refrigerator at high temperatures!
Do you decide to use buttercream anyway? If so, we've listed some tips for you to make sure it stays good during baking!
Tip 1: Divide your buttercream into smaller portions and refrigerate it before using it.
This way it stays firm longer and you can use it more easily while decorating your baked goods.
Tip 2: After decorating, put your decorated baked goods in the refrigerator as soon as possible.
This ensures that the buttercream cools and becomes firmer, so it is less likely to melt. When doing this, be careful how long you leave your baked goods in the refrigerator. Too long in the refrigerator will cause it to dry out. Therefore, postpone decorating with buttercream as long as possible before serving if you want to let it chill in the fridge.
Plan summer baking well!
Finally, it's important to remember that baking in the summer can sometimes be a bit more challenging than during the rest of the year. But with a little planning and creativity, you can still make delicious pastries that look great and taste as good as ever. Whether you choose buttercream, whipped cream or another type of frosting, there are plenty of options to choose from and experiment. Don't let the high temperatures of summer stop you! After all, enjoying a piece of cake in the sunshine is one of the best things there is, right? Even if we say so ourselves.
