Step 1: Bake the red velvet cakes
Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-assisted oven) and grease the cake pan with baking spray.
Prepare 500 g FunCakes Red Velvet Cake Mix with 3 eggs, 118 ml oil, and 200 ml water as indicated on the package. Spoon the batter into the cake pan and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes until done. After baking, turn the cake out onto a cooling rack and allow it to cool completely.
Clean the cake pan and grease it again.
Prepare the remaining 330 g FunCakes Red Velvet Cake Mix with 2 eggs, 77 ml oil, and 130 ml water as indicated on the package. Spoon the batter into the cake pan and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes until done. Turn the cake out onto a cooling rack and allow it to cool completely.
Step 2: Make the chocolate skulls
Melt the Wilton Candy Melts according to the package instructions in the microwave. Fill the skull mould with the melted Candy Melts and create the lettering using the alphabet mould. Allow everything to set in the refrigerator.
Once fully chilled and hardened, carefully remove the skulls from the mould and gently release the letters. The skulls should pop out of the mould easily when properly set.
Step 3: Prepare the Swiss Meringue Buttercream
Prepare the FunCakes Swiss Meringue Buttercream using 200 g mix, 140 ml water, and 440 g soft unsalted butter according to the package instructions.
Step 4: Slice and fill the cake
Level the red velvet cakes and slice them into even layers using a cake leveler. For the best result, use the smooth bottom layer and one middle layer from each cake. This creates a nice, even surface.
Stack the layers with a thin layer of buttercream between each one. Using a sharp knife, carve the stacked cake into a coffin shape. If you would like a longer coffin shape, use the cake pieces you trim away and attach them to the bottom of the cake with a little buttercream.
Cover the entire outside of the cake with a layer of buttercream and smooth it out. Refrigerate the cake until the buttercream has set.
Step 5: Prepare the piping bags and decorate
Fit the piping bags with the different decorating tips and fill them with buttercream.
Using tip #104, pipe a scalloped border around the top edge of the coffin. Then use the same tip to create elegant garlands along the sides of the cake. Always keep the wider side of the tip facing the cake.
Pipe a thin line along the top edge of each garland using tip #005.
Using tip #4B, connect the garlands by piping a small shell where they meet. Attach a Candy Melts skull beneath each shell.
Arrange the Candy Melts letters on top of the cake to create your message.
To finish, pipe a shell border around the top edge of the cake using tip #4B and decorate with edible blood spray. For thicker blood drips, spray some of the edible blood onto a teaspoon first and then carefully drizzle it onto the cake.
